Identify Flea & Tick Infestations

Identifying a flea infestation can be fairly simple. Is your pet is scratching excessively? Examine your pet’s fur. Red skin and lose hair are often signs of fleas. You may spot insects between the hairs. You and your family may have bites as well.

Fleas are approximately 2.5 mm long. Their bodies are flat and they don’t have wings. They have six long legs and can jump great distances. Eggs, larvae, and pupae may be thriving throughout your home and yard. They can be extrememly difficult to see. Flea larvae are dirty-white in color and measure 3 to 5.2 mm in length.

Fleas aren’t always easy to see. If you suspect you may have a flea infestation, call us.

Warning
Without treatment, fleas that are inside your home will lay eggs and an infestation will quickly multiply out of control. Flea infestations are not easy to remove. Flea removal can take weeks as eggs hatch and larvae grow. To ensure proper removal, be sure to continue your flea elimination steps for at least six weeks.

Ticks can be a little easier to identify. They are small, red-brown in color, and uniform in color across their bodies. Its mouthparts are easy to see and their bodies are flattened and shaped like a tear drop. They can get on your clothing or body after you’ve spent time outside especially in tall grass or bush. They can often be found inside the ears and in or around the eyes of pets, too.

Warning
Never wait to call us about a potenential tick infestation. Ticks can carry serious diseases. According to the CDC, more than 23,000 human cases of Lyme disease were recorded in 2002, with an estimated 9 out of 10 cases going unreported.

All types of ticks feed exclusively on the blood of vertebrates. Ticks spend the majority of their life on or near the ground. They wait for a suitable host animal. They are unable to run, hop, fly, or move quickly. Instead, ticks have to climb onto an appropriate object (such as tall grass or weeds) in order to mount their host. Most of the tick problems that we encounter are in and around homes. A home can become heavily infested if the family dog picks up ticks from an infested residence, boarding kennel, or the outdoors.

What To Do If I Have Fleas Or Ticks

Upon identifying an infestation, clean your home thoroughly and treat your pet with veterinarian-recommended products. All of your linens and pet beds should be washed. Vacuum upholstered furniture. Remove and vacuum under cushions and in cracks and crevices of furniture. Allow carpet to dry and vacuum a second time to remove additional fleas that were induced to emerge. Continue to vacuum for 10 days to 2 weeks to remove adult fleas that continue to emerge from pupal cocoons.

Most importantly, contact your local pest control expert. When you call Cape Fear Termite & Pest Control, we will discuss customized solutions for your home and needs.
